Welcome to Elizabeth Street: Jennifer Prezioso

Owner and Butcher at Albanese Meats and Poultry (238 Elizabeth Street)

The most crowded sidewalks on Elizabeth Street are in front of Albanese Meats and Poultry, the 100+ year institution owned and operated by butcher Jennifer Prezioso. It is the stop on every New York City food tour, because of its ability to source unique and hard to get cuts of meat (have you even heard of a veal brisket?).

Jennifer learned the family trade from her grandfather, Elizabeth Street stalwart Moe the Butcher, known for his trademark slogan, “I gotcha steaks!” In his later years, Jennifer began driving Moe to work and stuck around to learn the family trade. When Moe died in 2020, she was faced with a tough choice:
close the business or become a butcher.

Even if you are not in New York City, you may recognise the storefront from its appearances in “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and various commercials, television shows and movies throughout the decades. Food is a family business, with Jennifer’s husband Oliviero, a sommelier from Torino, set to open a new restaurant Balera in Brooklyn.
