Welcome to Elizabeth Street: Happy Anniversary Beggars Run

Beggars Run is a London based tailoring brand, focused on bringing the best curation of unique and unorthodox fabrics directly from English and Irish mills. The brand has a cult following amongst artists, musicians, and other creative types, who are drawn to its classic cuts of English tradition, in a relaxed and considered atmosphere.

A story can have many beginnings and many endings, they say – but for the sake of simplicity, let’s go with this one…

Beggars Run co-founder Cian McAuliffe spent his formative years in the West of Ireland, where deviating from the herd was seen as risky or as having “notions.” But with clothes being his primary source of expression, it was a necessary gamble.

Cian, along with university pal Edward Hussey, began Beggars Run on the second floor of an East End pub. A shared passion for all things cloth, the duo sought to create a brand focused on discovering the most unique and unorthodox fabrics from Irish and English mills.

Their motive? To restitch the rules of tailoring: old school cuts in newfangled fabrics and a home for any waif or stray. It was about balancing English tradition, and their Irish charisma.

They opened their first New York City shop in the heart of Elizabeth Street, in the midst of the “Save Elizabeth Street Garden” movement. This movement rallied local small business owners and residents to save the community’s urban oasis, giving the “new kids on the block” a chance to get to know their neighbors and the history of the street they now call home.

“We were drawn to the neighborhood’s positive energy, something that, for us, felt quintessentially New York. It’s a place steeped in local history, tangible in its buildings, businesses, and citizens, yet unmistakably forward-looking. It was very hard to resist,” Cian said.
